Tolga weather today, as shown in the live forecast above, reflects the Atherton Tablelands’ mild, elevated climate – cooler and less humid than coastal Cairns, with afternoon storms possible in the wet season.

What makes Tolga’s climate distinct?

The town sits about 750 metres above sea level, which moderates temperatures year‑round and produces distinct wet and dry seasons.

  • Wet season (November–April) brings heavy showers, frequent thunderstorms and high humidity, though not as oppressive as in Cairns.
  • Dry season (May–October) offers clear skies, crisp mornings and comfortable afternoons, with overnight lows sometimes dropping below 10°C.
  • Fog is common in winter mornings due to the surrounding tableland valleys, often clearing by mid‑morning.

How does Tolga compare with nearby towns?

Tolga’s weather sits between the coastal humidity of Cairns weather and the slightly cooler, wetter conditions of Atherton weather just a few kilometres south.

  • Cairns is typically 3–5°C warmer and much more humid, with a narrower annual temperature range.
  • Atherton, at a similar elevation, receives marginally more rainfall and can be a degree or two cooler on clear nights.
  • The local tolga weather radar (part of the BOM network) covers the Tablelands, useful for tracking afternoon storm cells in summer.

Is Tolga often affected by cyclones?

Direct cyclone landfalls are very rare on the Tablelands. However, ex‑tropical cyclones from the Coral Sea can bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Tolga, particularly in February and March.

When is the best time to visit Tolga?

May to September offers the most comfortable weather: warm, sunny days with low humidity and cool nights. This period also avoids the heaviest rain and reduces the risk of storms interrupting outdoor plans.

Does Tolga get frost?

Light frost can occur on a few winter mornings, usually in July, when clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to drop near 5°C. It rarely damages crops, but gardeners should cover sensitive plants.
